1997 OTEC System Using Uehara Cycle
In 1987, Dr. Kalina invented the Kalina cycle for OTEC using ammonia-water mixture as the working fluid. Kalina showed that the efficiency of the Kalina cycle was about twice as large as one of the Rankine cycle in his patent. By our research, it has been clear that if we use the Kalina cycle for OTEC using ammonia-water mixtures as the working fluid, the performance of the evaporator and condenser in the Kalina cycle is smaller than that of the conventional Rankine cycle using pure fluid. Especially, the performance of the condenser is much lower. In order to improve on the performance of the Kalina cycle, we invented a new cycle, called the Uehara cycle, with absorption and extraction process for power plant. From our theoretical research, it has been clear that the thermal efficiency of OTEC using the Uehara cycle is increased by about 15% compared to the Kalina cycle.
In this paper, the new experimental power plant of OTEC using the Uehara cycle is shown and the performance test of evaporator and condenser is carried out by experiment.
